But they'll bounce forever and you'll be able to claim that your long game rivals Tiger or John Daly or Davis Love III. They're slightly smaller than the USGA legal size of 1.68 inches diameter. If you want to impress your buddies, then send away for a sleeve of those "no name" mail order balls from Connecticut. All you're told is what the advertiser wants you to know. The point is that you were not present when the balls were tested. Maybe Brand X was comparing their ball fresh out of the package to a competitor's ball that had been smacked a hundred times and was therefore "softened up" before the test. Maybe the balls are of different compression. Or, one competitor might be comparing their longest ball to a competitor's "control" ball rather than the competitor's "distance" ball. But change the driver, or change the temperature or humidity and all of a sudden the competitors' balls become superior. Maybe with a particular driver on a day of specific temperature and humidity, their ball can beat all other major brands. Each manufacturer will concoct circumstances and conditions to favor their ball over a competitor's for the sake of a demonstration or a published claim. "But what about the chart that shows Brand X outdistances Brand Y?"ĭon't be so gullible. These days, just about every famous name distance type ball on the market travels as far as the USGA permits it to travel. While it's true that ten or twenty years ago, few ball models could travel as far as the USGA permitted. Any ball that exceeds this limit is deemed illegal for sanctioned tournament play. The United States Golf Association prescribes a limit to just how far a golf ball may travel for a specific standard drive (formerly performed by a robot). If you're trying to sort out all the advertising and hype of one manufacturer from another, then pay close attention. Winners of a longest ball competition either receive cash or (more likely) will receive a modest prize such as a new driver (ironic, eh?) or dinner for two at a fancy restaurant. There will be two slates on each designated fairway: one blue (for the boys) and one red (for the girls). In mixed-gender competitions, there will be separate-but-simultaneous longest ball competitions for men and women. The last foursome of the day is supposed to gather up the slate and bring it into the clubhouse so that everyone learns who the big hitter was for the day. If one does succeed in hitting a longer drive, the slate is repositioned to the new "longest drive" and this golfer's name replaces the previous title-holder on the slate. Successive competitors will attempt to better that distance. The golfer takes the second shot in the normal manner, but before leaving that spot, pushes the slate into the ground to demark where the longest ball was struck. This golfer will write his or her name on the slate and will carry the slate to the location where his or her drive came to rest. The slate is sometimes referred to as a "proximity marker" or " Hirtensteine". He or she will find a slate (mounted on a stake) situated near the center of the fairway about 150 yards from the tee. The first player of the day whose ball lands within the zone of eligibiity becomes the person with the longest drive for the moment. A chalk line is drawn down the center of the fairway and to be eligible, a ball must come to rest within a certain number of yards of that chalk line. Occasionally the "zone of eligibility" is even more restrictive than the fairway. Only drives that land in the fairway are eligible to compete for longest ball. On these designated holes, players will compete for honors of driving the longest ball off the tee that day.Īny ball that comes to rest beyond the boundaries of the fairway is excluded from the competition no matter how far it travelled. The other chosen among the par four and par five holes on the back nine. One is chosen from the par four or par five holes on the front nine. In Longest Ball, two holes on the course are designated as the "Longest Ball" holes. These are typically "longest ball", "closest to the pin" and often "most accurate drive". If you're here, then you want to know about one of these two topics:Ģ) Which brand and model travels the farthest?ġ) LONGEST BALL/LONGEST DRIVE COMPETITIONįor corporate and other organizational events, it is common practice to mix in three additional bonus competitions along with the regular format just to spice things up.
